Guided Discussion: Love, Respect & Fear - The 3 Pillars of Employee Relationships
As we close out August, we're taking 808 Club outside for a special Summer Patio Session, weather permitting. Grab a coffee, pull up a chair, and get ready for an open conversation about one of the most complicated parts of running any business: leading people.
For this Guided Discussion, Jacob Cadenhead and Trevor Howard will introduce a provocative framework for examining employee relationships through three powerful forces: Love, Respect and Fear.
Great leaders want to build teams where people feel valued and genuinely enjoy coming to work. But is being liked enough? Where does respect come from? Does some level of fear, whether fear of consequences, disappointing the team, missing expectations, or losing an opportunity, actually play an important role in accountability?
And perhaps the bigger question: what happens when one of these three becomes too dominant?
Following a short opening framework, we'll turn the conversation over to the room. Members will be encouraged to share their own experiences managing employees, building culture, handling difficult conversations, establishing boundaries, rewarding performance, and dealing with situations where relationships with employees became either a competitive advantage or a leadership challenge.
We'll Unpack
- Love: How much should employees genuinely like and connect with their leaders?
- Respect: How is respect earned, maintained, and sometimes lost?
- Fear: Is there a healthy role for consequences and accountability in a strong culture?
- What happens when a leader prioritizes being liked over being effective?
- Can you maintain strong personal relationships while still holding people accountable?
- How do different leadership styles affect different personalities?
- Where should leaders draw the line between friendship and leadership?
- What creates loyalty that lasts beyond compensation?
There isn't one leadership style that works for every employee, every business, or every situation. That's exactly why this is a Guided Discussion.
We'll bring the framework. The collective experience in the room will build the conversation. Come ready to share what has worked, what hasn't, and what years of leading people have taught you.
